|Biography & Genealogy:||Josiah Ryland Jr, Class of 1859 (graduated 19 out of 29). Born- July 28, 1838. Matriculated from Bruington, Va. At VMI 3 years. Military Record: Helped organize King and Queen Artillery Company and elected 1st Lt in company May 20, 1861. Entered service at Stevensville May 29, 1861 with company. Unit assigned as Company B to 4th Virginia Heavy Artillery (4th Battalion Virginia Heavy Artillery; later redesignated Company K, 34th Virginia). Acting Adjutant December 1861, February 1862. Dropped at re-organization May 16, 1862. Enlisted at Strader's Mill September 18, 1862 for war as Private, Company H, 9th Virginia Cavalry. Captured at Bloomfield November 8, 1862. Exchanged November 18, 1862. Absent guarding POWs May-June 1863. Absent on detached service as nurse and in hospital (debility) much of 1864. Post War Career: Moved to Richmond 1884 when appointed to clerkship in state auditor's office. To second auditor 1892. Teacher; farmer; school superintendent. Died- October 15, 1900.|
