Biography & Genealogy: | Hall James Robert, Class of 1859: Born- 1838. Matriculated from Point Pleasant (WV). At VMI 1 year and 2 months. Military Record: Appointed Major, 13th WV August 20, 1862 at Point Pleasant. To Lt Col January 18, 1864. Wounded in action (right arm, shoulder) July 24, 1864. In hospital (Frederick, Md). Killed in action at Cedar Creek while commanding the regiment. Col (and future US President) R.B. Hayes, his brigade commander wrote, "[he] had not yet recovered from wounds received in a previous battle, and might well have been excused from returning to duty for many weeks; but with a noble heroism and devotion to duty characterisitcs of the man he would not be absent when a battle was in prospect. He was hit by two balls, either of which would have killed him, early in action, in the extreme front, where the danger was greatest. No braver or truer man fell on that day." Died- October 19, 1864 at Cedar Creek. |
