Biography & Genealogy: | John Fletcher, Class of 1859: Born- unknown. Matriculated from Upperville, VA. At VMI 1 year, having entered as a 3d Classman (sophomore). Military Record: Enlisted in the spring of 1861 in Company A, 7th Virginia Cavalry; elected Lieutenant in June of 1861; appointed Captain on Apr. 13, 1862 (date of rank Apr. 1); Killed in Action at Buckton Station; his brother Clinton (not a VMI alumnus) was also killed in the same battle; the third brother, Robert (also not an alumnus) was disabled by a wound at First Manassas; Major General (later Lieutenant General) T.J. "Stonewall" Jackson called John one of the most valuable officers of his cavalry. Died- Killed in Action on May 23, 1862 during the Battle of Buckton Station. |
