Biography & Genealogy:John Fletcher, Class of 1859: Born- unknown. Matriculated from Upperville, VA. At VMI 1 year, having entered as a 3d Classman (sophomore). Military Record: Enlisted in the spring of 1861 in Company A, 7th Virginia Cavalry; elected Lieutenant in June of 1861; appointed Captain on Apr. 13, 1862 (date of rank Apr. 1); Killed in Action at Buckton Station; his brother Clinton (not a VMI alumnus) was also killed in the same battle; the third brother, Robert (also not an alumnus) was disabled by a wound at First Manassas; Major General (later Lieutenant General) T.J. "Stonewall" Jackson called John one of the most valuable officers of his cavalry. Died- Killed in Action on May 23, 1862 during the Battle of Buckton Station.

The database currently includes the names of all enrolled students (both graduates and non-graduates) from VMI's opening in 1839 through the World War II era. In addition, you will find biographical and genealogical information, including a summary of military service during the Civil War, for many individuals who attended in the 19th century. The database also includes some historical Faculty and Board of Visitors members, as well as U. S. Army students sent to VMI for training during World Wars I and II.
