Biography & Genealogy: | Collins Dixon, Class of 1859: Born- unknown. Matriculated from Rectortown, VA. At VMI 7 months, entering as a 3d Classman (sophomore): arrested in 1856 and held under $500 bond on charges of shooting a law enforcement officer; outcome of the trial is unknown. Military Record: Enlisted for 1 year on May 17, 1861 at Rectortown as a Private, Company B, 8th Virginia; sick Nov.-Dec. 1861, and again Aug.-Sep. 1862; Court-Martialed for not being present during the Battle of "Slaughter Gap Mountain;" sentenced to forfeit 10 days' pay and be bucked for 2 hours a day for 10 days; deserted Oct. 30, 1862, later turning himself in to the Provost Marshall, U.S. XI Corps at Gainesville on Nov. 15 because he wanted to go north until the war was over; sent to Old Capitol Prison in Washington, D.C.; no further records found. Died- unknown. |
