Biography & Genealogy:Corbin Crutchfield, Class of 1859. Genealogy: Born at Snow Hill Spotsylvania County, VA, August 14, 1838, the son of Stapleton Crutchfield and Sarah Ann Alsop. Maternal grandfather - Major Benjamin Alsop of Spotsylvania. Paternal grandparents - Maj. Stapleton Crutchfield (War of 1812) and Elizabeth Minor, daughter of Gen. Garrett Minor. VMI Record: Matriculated from Spotsylvania Courthouse on September 11, 1855. Attended 1 year 1 month. At beginning of sophomore year was dismissed for hazing new cadets. Military Record: Entered service 25 April 1861 as 1st LT, Company E, 9th VA Cavalry; elected Captain 26 August 1861; in poor health and frequently absent on medical furlough. Dropped from rolls 5 December 1862; no further record. Career: Merchant. Married: On February 7, 1861, Miss Martha M. Frazer of Spotsylvania; no children; wife died May 1867. Died: Taken ill while traveling for business; died Jan. 19, 1881, in Trenton, KY, at the home of his brother.
