Married- Mildred Irving Garland 9/24/1851; 1st child - Mildred Irving Ellis; 3rd child- John Thomas Ellis; 2nd- Rose Alexander Ellis; 4th- Marian Ellis. Matriculated to VMI from Pedlar Mills, VA. At VMI 3 years. Pre War Career: teacher; merchant; commissioner of revenue in Amherst County, VA. Military Record: Entered service Apr. 15, 1861 at Amherst Court House for 1 year; Appointed Capt. of Company H, 19th Virginia on July 1, 1861; elected Major Apr. 29, 1862; Wounded in Action (thigh) at Cold Harbor; promoted to Lieutenant Colonel Sep. 14, 1862; mortally wounded by cannon ball in artillery firing that preceded Pickett's Charge during the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. Died- July 3, 1863 during the Battle of Gettysburg. Buried Pickett's Division Hospital, Bream's Mill in apple orchard; disinterred to Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA August 1872 in box #246.

About the Database

The database currently includes the names of all enrolled students (both graduates and non-graduates) from VMI's opening in 1839 through the World War II era. In addition, you will find biographical and genealogical information, including a summary of military service during the Civil War, for many individuals who attended in the 19th century. The database also includes some historical Faculty and Board of Visitors members, as well as U. S. Army students sent to VMI for training during World Wars I and II.
