Pat. Grandfather- Issac Coles; Pat. Grandmother- Catherine Thompson. Mat. Grandfather- Dr. James Dodridge Patton; Mat. Grandmother- Mary Stearn. Married- Sally Munford on Feb. 15, 1871. Children- 1- Nannie Munford Coles; 2- Garnett Lee Coles; 3- Elise Carrington Coles. VMI Record: Entered VMI- Sept. 15, 1855; Left after three years. Military Record: Enlisted at Williamsburg July 28, 1861 as Captain of Co. B, Major E. B. Montague's Battalion; this unit became Co. I, 53rd Va. Infantry in late 1861; absent sick much of early 1862; not re-elected as Captain in May 1862 when his regiment was re-organized; worked with the Commissary Dept; no further record found, but in Oct. 1864, Col. P. M. Henry of the 5th Battalion Va. Reserves requested Coles's appointment as Adjutant. No records of the appointment being accepted. Unofficial source says he was captured at Gettysburg and held until the end of the war. Careers: Lawyer; Judge. Died- July 5, 1896. |
