Married- Margaret Jane Garrett, daughter of John Garrett of Bedford Co. Va. Children- 1- Edgar St. Clair Burks; 2- John Robert Burks; 3- Warren Dewit Burks; 4- Ella Lee Burks Dudley, who married Mason Dudley; 5- Nettie Jackson Burks DePriest, who married Aubrey DePriest. VMI Record: Entered VMI- July 9, 1855; Dismissed July 21, 1856 for allowing another cadet to be hazed while he (Burks) was on duty as Sentinel. Civil War Record: Enlisted April 20, 1861 in Lexington in Co. F 4th Va. Regiment; Elected 2nd Lieut. July 27, 1861; Captured at First Kernstown; Exchanged Aug. 5, 1862; Wounded in action at the Second Battle of Manassas; Re-elected 2nd Lieut. Sept. 24, 1862; Promoted to 1st Lieut. April 20, 1863; Captured on retreat from Pa. July 7, 1863; Held at Johnson's Island, Oh.; Exchanged Mar. 7, 1865. Careers: Teacher; packet boat captain for 30 years; after that he worked for a Railroad Company. Died- June 8, 1901, buried at Falling Springs Presbytrian Church in Rockbridge Co. Va.|
