Biography & Genealogy: | John Lancaster Waring, Class of 1870: Genealogy: Born- May 6, 1848 near Richmond, Va. Father- Warner Lewis Waring; Mother- Adelaide Jane Lancaster Pat. Grandfather- John Waring; Pat. Grandmother- Elizabeth Latane Mat. Grandfather- John A. Lancaster; Mat. Grandmother- Adelaide De Rieux Married- Peggy Blair Harvie, daughter of Dr. John B. Harvie Children- 1-Dr. John Harvie Waring, who married Lucille Matthews; 2- Adelaide Lancaster Waring Warman, who married William R. Warman Civil War Service: Ran away from home at age of 14 to join the C.S.A in Richmond, but was recalled by his parents. He enrolled at Hampton-Sydney in 1864 but ran away again to join the army close to the end of the War. He served as a courier for General Robert E. Lee during the retreat from Richmond and at Appomattox. VMI Record: Entered VMI- Sept. 10, 1866; Graduated July 4, 1870 standing 28 in a class of 52 Careers- Banker; Capt. of Va. National Guard; President of the Mim Co. for surgical instrument manufacturing in Blanchester, Ohio. Died- Dec. 5, 1942 in Wilmington, Ohio. (At the time of his death, he was the oldest living graduate of VMI) |
