|Biography & Genealogy:||Horace Hardaway Epes, Class of 1870: Born- Aug. 21, 1849. Matriculated from Nottoway County. At VMI 4 years (plus 12 days wartime service as a member of the Class of 1868, having entered on Mar. 22, 1865). Military Record: Fought with VMI Corps of Cadets in Richmond trenches until it disbanded on Apr. 2, 1865; unofficial source says he then joined the Richmond Howitzers, although no official record of such service has ever been found; returned to VMI in the fall of 1866. Post War Career: served as a teacher and school official at President Franklin Female College and Cedar Bluff College, both in Kentucky, as well as the Alabama Female College; worked as the school principal and founder of Newport News High School; Episcopalian; last Civil War alumnus to graduate from VMI (as judged by class standing). Died- Jan. 14, 1912 in Newport News, VA., and buried at the Greenlawn Cemetery there.|
