|Biography & Genealogy:||Benjamin Edward Smith Jr., Class of 1860: Born- October 27, 1838. Matriculated from Nonintervention, Va. At VMI 1 year. Military Record: Enlisted May 20, 1861 at St John for 1 year as Pvt, Company C, 20th Va. Captured July 13, 1861 at Richmond Mountain. Paroled. Reported October 1862 to be one of the able-bodied exchanged POWs loafing around his hometown (Lunenburg). Enlisted December 1, 1862 at Chaffin's Bluff as Private, Capt C.T. Allen's Company Va Heavy Artillery (Lunenburg Artillery) ($50 bounty). Detailed from company April 6, 1865. After company wiped out that day attached self to Brig Gen H.A. Wise's brigade. Surrendered at Appomattox. Took oath June 29, 1865. Post War Career: Lawyer; real estate; merchant. Lived in Pulaski. Died- January 28, 1921.|
