Biography & Genealogy: | William Gallatin Paxton, Class of 1860 (graduated 17 out of 41): Born- August 24, 1838. Matriculated from Lexington, Va. At VMI 4 years. Military Record: Entered service at Vicksburg, Ms March 26, 1861 for 1 year as 1st Sgt, Company F, 10th Mississippi. April-June 1861 roll shows as 1st Lt. Appointed Adjutant July 19, 1861. Returned to company early fall. Sick October 1861. Discharged Octobebr 16, 1861. On October 15, 1861 appointed 1st Lt and Adjutant, Col W. Adams's Regiment Mississippi Cavalry (1st Mississippi Cavalry; Col R.C. Wood's Regiment Missippi Cavalry). On detached service late 1861-spring 1862. Captured at Lebanon, Tennessee May 5 (some records show May 17) 1862. Held at Johnson's Island, Ohio. Exchanged September 1862 at Vicksburg, Mississippi. Recommended for Maj, 20th Mississippi Octobber 1863, but not appointed. Paroled May 13, 1865 at Jackson, Mississippi as 1st Lt and Adjutant, Adams's Cavalry Regiment. Post War Career: Mason. Manufacturer. Died- October 26, 1898 in Vicksbubrg, Mississippi. |
