Biography & Genealogy: | Peter Johnston Otey, Class of 1860 (graduated 22 out of 41). Born- December 22, 1840. Matriculated from Lynchburg, Va. At VMI 4 years. Originally William Norvell Otey but changed name c1861. Military Record: Appointed Lt, Provisional Army Virginia at unknown date. In December 1861 Acting Assistant Adjutant General on staff of Col (later Brig Gen) G.C. Wharton. In February 1862 Asssistant Adjutant General on staff of Brig Gen J.B. Floyd as Captain. At unknown date (probably early 1862) appointed Lt and Adjutant , 51st Virginia. Commanding post at Wytheville July 1862. Elected Maj, 30th Battalion Virginia Sharpshooters (Lt Col J.L. Clarke's battalion) in late summer or fall 1862. (Formal date of rank October 3, 1862 but he is referred to as Maj of the battalion in September 1862.) Wounded in action (right arm) at New Market. Returned to duty September 30, 1864. Commanded brigade fall 1864. Captured at Waynesboro March 2, 1865. Held at Ft Delaware, Delware and Ft Hamilton, New York. Released on oath May 30, 1865. Post War Career: Organized and president of Lynchburg & Durham Railroad. Democrat. Member of VMI Board of Visitors 1889-94. Represented 6th District of Virginia in US House of Representatives 1895-1902. Maried Mollie Floyd. Civil engineer; land developer; railroader; banker; public official. Died- May 4, 1902 in Lynchburg. Buried in Presbyterian Cemetery there. |
