Children- 1- Sarah Rebecca McBroom who married Mr. Shoemaker; 2- Fannie Draper McBroom; 3- James William McBroom, Jr.; 4- Jackson McBroom; 5- John Henry McBroom; 6- Georgie McBroom. VMI Record: Entered VMI- Aug. 11, 1856; Left after one year due to ill health. Attended the University of Va. 1856-57 Graduated from Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn. 1859 with a degree in Law. Civil War Record- Enlisted May 1, 1861 at Petersburg, Va. as 1st Lieut. for Co. C 5th Va. Battalion; out sick in Feb. 1862; Unit disbanded in the fall of 1862; May have re-enlisted May 5, 1864 in Prince George Co. Va. as Private in Co. C 3rd Battalion of Va. Reserves and detailed May 17, 1864 as scout for Brig. Gen. Henry A. Wise; Unofficial source says paroled June 6, 1865. Careers- Lawyer in Cambden Arkansas before the war; Returned to Va. in fall of 1860; Commonweath Attorney of Wise and Buchanan Cos. Va. in 1871; Judge of Russel Co. Va. sometime after 1871; Postmaster at Abingdon, Va, in 1896. Died- Jan. 12, 1916 in Abingdon, Va.|
