Biography & Genealogy: | Richard Stevenson Kinney, Class of 1860: Born- February 28, 1841. Matriculated from Staunton, Va. At United States Military Academy 1858-1861. Resigned April 22, 1861. Military Record: Appointed 2nd Lt, Provisional Army of Virginia May 1, 1861. May have served as Acting 2nd Lt, Company A, 52d Virginia later in 1861 and/or with (unknown) company of Richmond Howitzers. Appointed Cadet, Confederate States Army August 28, 1861. Ordered to Bowling Green, Kentucky November 1861; to Jackson, Mississippi May 27, 1862. Assistant Ordnance Officer on staff of Major Gen E. Van Dorn July 1862 (perhaps earlier). Requested transfer to Virginia December 1862. Assigned to 52nd Virginia December 20, 1862 (probably Company A). Wounded in action (leg) near Fredericksburg May 5, 1863. In hospital (Richmond, Staunton). By September 1863 Acting Inspector on staffs of Brigadier Generals W. Smith and J. Pegram. To 2nd Lt Reserve Army Confederate States February 12, 1864 (Date of rank November 23, 1863). Wounded in action (face) May 10, 1864 at Spotsylvania. On detached service at Richmond fall 1864. Appointed Captain Decembber 17, 1864 for duty with dismounted men of Brig Gen J. Dearing's cavalry brigade. Post War Career: Teacher; clerk. Quartermaster clerk, US Army.
