|Biography & Genealogy:||William M. Nelson, Class of 1846. Genealogy: b. 1825 February 1, at "Rosney" (Rosny), Clarke Co., VA; Parents- Thomas F. Nelson (born Clarke Co., VA) and Mildred Walker Nelson (born at Belvoir, Albemarle Co., VA). Paternal Grandparents- Philip Nelson (son of Gov. Thomas Nelson) and Sarah Burwell Nelson (daughter of Nathaniel Burwell of Isle of Wight Co., VA). Maternal Grandparents- Hon. Hugh Nelson (also the son of Gov. Thomas Nelson) and Eliza Kinloch of Charleston, SC. They lived at Belvoir in Albemarle Co. VMI Record: Matriculated VMI August 6, 1844. Graduated July 4, 1846. Post-VMI Career - teacher, Petersburg, VA boys school, until ca. 1851; ca. 1851 decided to study for Episcopal ministry under Bishop Meade (his uncle by marriage, for whom he was named), ordained ca. 1854; first parish was St. Anne's in Albemarle Co., VA. All of his ministry was spent in Albemarle Co. with exception of 3 years in Kentucky. Civil War- unofficial source says acted as drillmaster; Episcopal clergyman in Charlottesville March 1863 when BG I. R. Trimble requested his appointment as chaplain. Appointed 2 May 1863 (Date of Rank 18 March) but he declined. Marriage- ca. 1848-50, to Sarah W. Semmes, youngest daughter of Dr. Thomas W. Semmes of Alexandria, VA. Issue 2 daughters, Anna S. Nelson and Eliza Kinloch Nelson. Died- July 9, 1876, Charlottesville, VA, at the home of his sister.|
