Biography & Genealogy: | Mason Graham Ellzey, Class of 1860: Born- 1838. Matriculated from Leesburg, VA. At VMI 2 years. Pre War Career: Doctor of Medicine, 1861. Military Record: according to an unofficial source, he served as the Drillmaster for Company K, 6th Virginia Cavalry and 8th Virginia while awaiting appointment to Surgeon; served as Acting Adjutant for Colonel (later Brigadier General) E. Hunton of the 8th Virginia; praised for "valuable aid" at First Manassas; an unofficial source also says he served as an aide to Brigadier General N.G. Evans and General (A.P.?) Hill; no official record of such services found; appointed assistant surgeon on July 19, 1862 (date of rank April 5); at hospital in Lynchburg, VA; passed medical board exam (probably in September) 1863 and assigned to 8th Virginia as Assistant Surgeon; paroled at Appomattox; unofficial source says he was a Professor of Chemistry, Virginia A&M (Now Virginia Tech). Post War Career: physician; teacher. Died- Mar. 18, 1915 in Richmond, VA. Buried in West River, Maryland. |
