Biography & Genealogy: | Charles Andrew Davidson, Class of 1860. Born 1839, Lexington VA. Parents: James Dorman Davidson, a lawyer in Lexington VA (b. 1808 d. 1882) and Hannah McC. Greenlee of Rockbridge Co., VA (b. 1812 d. 1889). Matriculated from Lexington, VA. At VMI 3 years after attending UVA 1860-61. Military Record: 1st Lieutenant with the Provisional Army of Virginia during the summer of 1861 (date of rank 1 May); served with engineers at Yorktown; resigned when Provisional Army of Virginia officers not accepted by Confederate government; appointed 1st Lieutenant at unknown date and reported to Company E, 1st Virginia Battalion on Nov. 3, 1861; on recruiting duty Feb.-Mar. 1862; wounded in action at Antietam; appointed Captain on Dec. 8, 1862 (date of rank Aug. 14); commandant, military prison, Army of Northern Virginia 1863-64; paroled at Appomattox. Post War Career: Lawyer; actively helped organize the Lee Memorial Association, serving as secretary from 1870-79; Mason; Presbyterian. Never married. Died- Feb. 25, 1879, buried Lexington. |
