Biography & Genealogy: | James Preston Baltzell, Class of 1860. Genealogy: Born January 15, 1838, Washington County, Virginia. Father- David Baltzell, b. Maryland. Mother- Sallie Dalton Hanby, b. Washington Co., VA. Marriage- Julia Barnesley of Kingston, Georgia, in 1863 (daughter of Godfrey Barnesley, a cotton planter and commission merchant, b. England); Issue- one daughter, Addie (married B. F. Sayler of Kingston, GA). VMI Record: Entered on July 30, 1856 and graduated July 4, 1860, standing 29th out of 41 graduates. Civil War Record: Was in Texas when war began; assigned to mustering duty with Co. A, 1st Confederate States Cavalry on Indian frontier; his unit sent to Arizona and then across Mississippi River; 1863-1865 Provost Marshall duty at Shelbyville and Manchester, Tennessee; Augusta, Georgia; and Opelika, Alabama. Career: Lumber merchant and farmer in Kingston, Georgia. Died on February 15, 1868 in a sawmill accident. His daughter, Addie, was two years old at the time of his death. |
