Genealogy: Born November 13, 1838 at Cottage Farm, Fauquier County, Virginia; Father- Richard Watts Ashton (b. 1799, Warrenton, VA., d. 1853); Mother- Mary Devereux (b. 1817, Wexford, Ireland; married 1835); paternal grandfather- Lawrence Ashton of Westmoreland Co., VA; paternal grandmother- Elizabeth Scott of Fauquier Co., VA. Marriage- 1. Mattie Maples of Minden, Louisiana in 1869; she died a few months after the marriage. 2. Sallie Land of Louisiana, on September 3, 1873. No issue. VMI Record: Entered on August 14, 1856, listing his guardian as Mrs. Sarah S. Glassell (his paternal aunt); left VMI after two years due to financial difficulties; did not graduate. Civil War Record: Entered service 11 May 1861 at New Orleans, Louisiana as 2nd Lieut., Company D, 2nd Louisiana Infantry; lost left arm at Second Manassas; resigned in June 1863 due to ill health. Career: studied law and opened practice in Shreveport, LA; in 1866 elected District Attorney there; delegate to Democratic National Convention in 1872. Died of yellow fever at Shreveport, LA on September 27, 1873. |
