Biography & Genealogy: | Hamlin Lassiter Norfleet (name changed to Henrique Northfleet): Genealogy: Born- October 5, 1836. Parents: Elisha Norfleet and Sarah E. Lassiter of Norfolk, VA. VMI Record: Matriculated from Suffolk, VA on July 21, 1854; graduated on July 5, 1858, standing 18th out of 19 graduates. Military Record: Returned to Virginia from Mississippi Fall 1860. Entered service April 17, 1861 at Suffolk for 1 year as 1st Lieutenant, Company A, 16th Virginia. Not re-elected at May 1862 re-organization--"like a great many of our best officers," wrote Brig Gen R.E. Colston. May have been the "Hamilton Norfleet" who on August 1, 1862 was elected Captain, Company L, 62nd Georgia Cavalry (a unit he helped raise) and who resigned November 1, 1862. (Unit became Company D, 8th CS Cavalry [Col J. Dearing's] and eventually Company I, 24th Virginia Cavalry). Enlisted at Savannah, Georgia September 15, 1863 for war as Sergeant, Company D, 2nd CS Engineers. Appointed Acting 2nd Lieutenant March 1864. No further record found. Marriage: To Marcelina de Oliveira Gondret, January 1875. Three sons & two daughters: 1. Carlos Adolfo 2. Nelson 3. Henrique 4. Sarah Angelica 5. Marieta Julia. Post War Career: Farmer; engineer. To Brazil 1867. He was one among a number of Confederate officers who left the U. S. after the south lost the Civil War and emigrated to Brazil. Died- June 12, 1928 in Brazil. |
