|Biography & Genealogy:||Mark Bernard Hardin, Class of 1858 (gradauted 1st out of 19) Born- August 14, 1838. Matriculated from Alexandria, Va. At VMI 4 years. Taught Latin, chemistry, and infantry tactics at VMI 1858-1860, and served as Assistant Commandant. Military Record: Commissioned in Provisional Army of Virginia 1861 (grade unknown). Assigned to duty July 1861 as Major 33rd Va. With regiment until commission expired August 30, 1861. Commissioned Maj, 9th Va October 16, 1861. Not re-elected May 20, 1862. Appointed Maj, 18th Battalion Va Heavy Artillery June 12, 1862. On court martial duty late 1862-early 1863. Slightly wounded in action March 1, 1864 at Ft Harrison (left shoulder) September 29, 1864. Taught at VMI while recuperating. Captured April 6, 1865 at Sayler's Creek. Held at Old Capitol Prison, DC and Johnon's Island, Oh. Released on oath June 27, 1865. Highly competent officer but unpopular with troops. Post War: Taught chemistry at VMI 1867-1889; at Clemson University (SC) 1890-1910, where he was chairman of the department. A building on Clemson Campus named for him. Died- April 26, 1916.|
