Biography & Genealogy: | Richard Osborne Grayson, Class of 1858 (non-graduate). Genealogy: Born at "Belmont" in Loudoun County, Virginia in 1838. Father- Richard Osborne Grayson. Mother- Margaret Fitzhugh. Paternal Grandparents- Benjamin Grayson and Miss Bronaugh. Maternal grandfather- Thomas F. Fitzhugh of "Boscobel," Stafford County, Virginia (immigrated from Scotland circa 1750). Richard's parents died while he was an infant and he was raised by his aunt, Elizabeth Osborne Grayson Carter. Siblings- Thoms Fitzhugh Grayson, Benjamin Grayson, Nannie Fitzhugh Grayson, Mary Stuart Grayson. VMI Record: Enrolled at VMI on August 2, 1854; resigned November 22, 1855. Occupation: miner in North Carolina immediately before the Civil War; no other information. Military Record: Entered the Confederate Army on June 19, 1861, serving in Company F, 8th Virginia Infantry Regiment; elected 2nd Lieutenant April 26, 1862. Death: Killed in action at Gaines's Mill, June 27, 1862. Other: He died unmarried. He was a cousin of John Cooke Grayson, Class of 1852. |
