Civil War Record: Enlisted April 19, 1861 as 2nd Lt. Co. C of the 12th Va. Infantry; Absent on sick leave Mar.- Apr. 1862; Made 1st Lt. Dec 30, 1862; Made Captain July 27, 1863; Wounded in action May 6, 1864 in the Battle of the Wilderness from a volley of "friendly fire" that also wounded Lt. Gen. James Longstreet (I found no record of him having lost an arm during the war, but in this incident he was shot through both legs); Returned to duty Sept. 1864. Surrendered with Gen. Robert E. Lee at Appomattox in 1865. Post War Career- Teacher; Farmer; Surveyor. Died- June 12, 1914 in Dinwiddie, Va. and buried there. |
