Biography & Genealogy: | John Noble Cummings Stockton, Class of 1857: Born- 1838. Matriculated from Charlottesville, Va. Military Record: Enlisted April 16, 1861 for 1 year at Charlottesville in Company A, 19th Virginia. Appointed 2nd Lt July 1, 1861. Late 1861-early 1862 served as Aide-de-camp to several officers who commanded the brigade (including Brig Gen P. StG Cocke and Brig Gen [later Maj Gen] G.E. Pickett). Not re-elected at re-organization March 1862. Dropped from company. Applied for appointment as Capt of artillery May 1862. Appointed 1st Lt and Adjutant, 1st Virginia August 18, 1862. Often in hospital December 1862-December 1864 (typhoid, syphilis, asthma, ulcerated mouth). Court martialed 1863 for violation of 45th Article of War and "conduct prejudicial to good order and military discipline." Sentenced to be cashiered and dismissed from service. Sentence remitted because of previous good conduct. Post War Career: Farmer. Died- April 4, 1884 in Staunton. |
