Biography & Genealogy:Alexander Rives Jr., Class of 1857 (graduated 6 out of 22). Born- 1838. Matriculated from Charlottesville, Va. At VMI 4 years. At UVa 1857-59. Military Record: Appointed Assistant Surgeon July 19, 1861. Served in hospitals in Charlottesville, Culpeper, and Front Royal July 1861-March 1862. Surgeon 15th Alabama March 1862-July 1864. Sick late 1862. Captured July 5, 1863 at Gettysburg. Released November 1863. May have served briefly with 47th Alabama fall 1863. To Surgeon June 1, 1864. Assigned to 61st North Carolina July 11, 1864. On leave late summer 1864. Paroled Greensboro, North Carolina May 1, 1865. Post War Career: Physician. Died- 1876 in Bolivar County, Misissippi.

The database currently includes the names of all enrolled students (both graduates and non-graduates) from VMI's opening in 1839 through the World War II era. In addition, you will find biographical and genealogical information, including a summary of military service during the Civil War, for many individuals who attended in the 19th century. The database also includes some historical Faculty and Board of Visitors members, as well as U. S. Army students sent to VMI for training during World Wars I and II.
