Biography & Genealogy: | Robert Conrad Powell, Class of 1857: Genealogy: Born- Aug. 1, 1838 in Leesburg, Loudoun Co. Va. Father- Dr. William Levin Powell; Mother- Ann Maria Powell (a cousin). Pat. Grandfather- Major Burr Powell; Pat. Grandmother- Catherine Brooke. Mat. Grandfather- Hon. Cuthbert Powell; Mat. Grandmother- Catherine Simins. Married- Mary Crawford Gregory, daughter of William Gregory of Alexandria, Va. Children- 1- William G. Powell (died at age 3); 2- Mary Donaldson Powell Scott, who married Lewis L. Scott; 3- Dr. Llewellyn Powell, who married Ruth Asstor, daughter of Horace Asstor and Grace Tyler. VMI Record: Entered VMI- July 21, 1854; Resigned Sept. 27, 1854- physically unable to discharge the duties of a cadet. (Had problems with in-grown nails) Later attended the Medical School of the University of Penn. 1860-61. Civil War Record: Enlisted at Alexandria as Private in Co. A, 17th Va. Regiment April 17, 1861; out sick in fall of 1861; detailed as hospital steward at Charlottesville 1861-62; passed medical board exam and appointed Asst. Surgeon in Confederate States Navy Jan. 8, 1862; At Jackson, Miss. Station on the CSS MISSOURI in 1863; At Mobile, Ala. Station 1863-65 (part time on the CSS TUSCALOOSA); Surrendered May 4, 1865 with naval and Marine forces in Ala. Paroled May 10, 1865. Careers: Moved to South America in 1866 and worked as Surgeon in the Colombian Navy; moved back to Alexandria, Va. and worked as Surgeon for the US Marine Hospital and for Richmond and Danville, Va. Railroad. Died- May 9, 1890, buried at Presbyterian Cemetery in Alexandria, Va. |
