Father- Matthew Hobson Murphy of Greensboro, Ala.; Mother- Adelaide Wells Brown Swisher of Austin, TX. Pat. Grandfather- Macon Murphy of Greensboro, Ala.; Pat. Grandmother- Mary Albma Hobson also of Greensboro. Mat. Grandfather- James Monroe Swisher of Austin, TX; Mat. Grandmother- Adelaide Byrd Wells of LeGrange, TX. Never married, no children. VMI Record: Entered VMI- Sept. 5, 1911; Dropped from rolls on Dec. 3, 1914. World War I Record: 2nd Lieut. U.S. Marine Corps (6th Regt. 2nd Division) Died- Killed in action June 7, 1918 in the Battle of Belleau Wood. Richard Murphy was buried in France and in 1921 was removed to a family plot in the Greensboro, Ala. city cemetery.
