Grandmother- Jane Poythress Mat. Grandfather- John Campbell; Mat. Grandmother- Eliza A. Murphy Married- Lucy R. Claybrook in 1867 Children- 1- Richard C. Mayo; 2- Charlotte Mayo Johnson, who married Thomas J. Johnson of Baltimore; 3- Archibald C. Mayo Entered VMI- July 31, 1854; Graduated July 4, 1857 standing 2 in a class of 23 Civil War Service- Enlisted as Major and commanded at Mathias Point in the summer of 1861 until assigned to the 47th Va. Infantry; Elected Col. on May 1, 1862; Wounded in Action at the Second Battle of Manassas; Commanded Brig. Gen. J. Kemper's brigade at Gettysburg July 3, 1863- unofficial source says he was wounded during that battle as well; Court Martialed July 8, 1863 after being found guilty of drunkenness while on duty, but retained grade and command; Often commanded brigade throughout 1864-65; Signed parole in Richmond Apr. 27, 1865 Careers- Teacher; Lawyer; Taught Math at Mount Pleasant Military Academy in NY 1857-58; Lieut.
