Genealogy & early life: Born August 1891, Richmond, VA; Father: John Archer Briggs (b. 23 April 1859 in Scottsville, Albemarle Co., VA; railroad contractor; died 1911). Mother: Carolyn Linda Walter, "Carrie" (b. 9 March 1866, Richmond, VA; died of tuberculosis in 1898). Siblings: Ethel May (b. May 1886; married John Leonard), Grace Lee ( b. June 1887), Miriam Virginia (b. May 1890), Archer K. (b. Feb. 1896; VMI Class of 1918, non-graduate); Family was living at 1019 W. Grove Ave., Richmond, in 1910. VMI Record: Enrolled on September 2, 1910; Parent listed as J. A. Briggs; resigned January 3, 1911 due to illness (typhoid). Later life: According to the 1920 census he was then living in the household of his brother-in-law Joseph Leonard, still in Richmond. No further information; he did not maintain contact with VMI. Pencil notation in file, dated 1918, says "John Walter Briggs is married." Death: July 26, 1932; buried Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA. |
