Biography & Genealogy: | Peachy Gilmer Breckinridge, Class of 1857: Genealogy: Born- Sept. 15, 1835 in Botetourt Co. Va. Father- Capt. Cary Breckinridge; Mother- Emma Gilmer. Pat. Grandfather- Col. Cary Breckinridge; Pat. Grandmother- Ann Selden. Mat. Grandfather- Peachy Ridgeway Gilmer; Mat. Grandmother- Mary Honse. Married- Julia Matlida Anthony in 1860. Children- 1- Anne Breckinridge, who married William Gordon Robertson; 2- John Gilmer Breckinridge (VMI Class of 1883). VMI Record: Entered VMI- July 5, 1853; Resigned after 2 years to attend William & Mary College. Later studied law at the University of Va. Careers: Joined the Beale Wagon Road Expedition after graduating from UVa 1857-59; returned from California and practiced law in Va. until the outbreak of the Civil War. Military Record: Enlisted May 1, 1861 at Amsterdam as Capt. of Co. K, 28th Va. Infantry; dropped April 28, 1862 at re-organization; At unknown date, became Major of the 3rd Regiment of the Virginia State Line; Unit disbanded ca. Mar. 1, 1863; Re-enlisted April 21, 1863 at Culpeper Court House as Private in Co. C, 2nd Va. Cavalry; promoted to Color Sgt. at an unknown date; unofficial source says he served as Acting Capt. of Co. B in this unit. Died- Killed in action at Kennon's Landing, Va. May 24, 1864. |
