Biography & Genealogy:George A. Speer, Jr. Genealogy: Born La Grange, Georgia on February 5, 1890. Father - George A. Speer, a banker in Atlanta; Mother - Louise Patterson. VMI Record: Matriculated Fall 1908; graduated June 1912. Military Record: Commissioned 2nd LT in U.S. Army, November 1912; resigned commission March 1915. In April 1915 joined Canadian Army, 59th Stormont and Glengarry Regt. Served in France during World War I (21st Battln and other units, Canadian Expeditionary Force; awarded Military Cross "for conspicuous gallantry." Demobilized 1919. Complete service chronology on file. Later life: Married Majorie Anne Jones on February 27, 1917 in London England. 4 children - George, Jr., Richard, Barbara, Marjorie. Superintendent of the Niagara plant of the Niagara Falls Power Company. Died at Niagara Falls, New York, 18 January 1924. Photo at right: Speer and his father in London, 1915. The database currently includes the names of all enrolled students (both graduates and non-graduates) from VMI's opening in 1839 through the World War II era.
