Grandmother- Mary Ann Pruden. Mat. Grandfather- Theophilus Underwood; Mat. Grandmother- Elizabeth Joyner. Married- Lou Emma Betts on Jan. 31, 1856. Children- 1- Claudis Crawley Phillips; 2- W. J. Phillips. VMI Record: Entered VMI- Aug. 5, 1850 as 3rd Classman (Sophomore); Graduated- July 4, 1853 standing 5 in a class of 25. Civil War Record: Helped organize and elected Captain of the Chuckatuck Light Artillery which enlisted May 18, 1861; his company became Co. F of the 9th Va. Regiment; Saved Regiment's flag at Malvern Hill; Absent, sick in late 1862; unofficial source says promoted to Lt. Col in late spring, 1863 and twice wounded in action in Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg; Promoted to Col. Aug. 25, 1863; Captured at Sayler's Creek April 6, 1865 and held at Johnson's Island, OH. Released on oath, July 25, 1865. Careers: Helped organize and became President of Chuckatuck Military Academy; business man in Norfolk, Va. 1870-90; moved to New York and became President of New York Board of Trade; Member of Confederate States Veterans' Camp of New York City. Died- Feb. 11, 1908 of stomach cancer while still living in New York City.|
