Suddoth; Mother- Jane West Martin; paternal grandfather- John Suddoth; paternal grandmother- Asenath Thompson; maternal grandparents- Francis Martin of Fauquier County and Nancy "Ann" West of Fairfax County; maternal great-grandfather- Thomas West of Alexandria, Virginia; Francis Suddoth was a direct descendant of the West Family of Alexandria, who donated part of the land on which Alexandria was founded; Never married, no children. VMI Record: Entered VMI- Aug. 2, 1852; Graduated July 4, 1856 standing 3 in a class of 33. Career: Teacher; at beginning of war was teaching school in Friars Point, Mississippi. Civil War Service: Joined the 11th Mississippi Infantry and served briefly as 2nd Lieut; returned to Virginia around 25 May 1861 and entered the Provisional Army of Virginia as a 2nd Lieut. and served as a drillmaster with the 26th Virginia Infantry; after Provisional Army disbanded, was appointed on 11 September 1861 a 2nd Lieut. of Co. B of the 26th Virginia (a Mississippi company later transferred to the 48th MS Infantry); Appointed Adjutant of the 26th Va. Oct. 19, 1861. Died- Oct. 28, 1861 of typhoid fever contracted while in service, at Gloucester Point, Va. (the date of death is 19, 29, or 30 Oct. in some records). |
