|Biography & Genealogy:||Francis Williamson Smith, Class of 1856 Genealogy: Born- Nov. 12, 1838 in Norfolk, Va. Father- James Marsden Smith; Mother- Anne Williamson. Pat. Grandfather- Francis Smith; Pat. Grandmother- Anne Marsden. Mat. Grandfather- Thomas Price Williamson; Mat. Grandmother- Anne McClellan McCauley Walke. Married- Anna Maria Dandridge Deans. Children- Anna Maria Dandridge Smith, who married Philip Edward Yeatman, VMI Class of 1883. VMI Record: Entered VMI- July 27, 1853; Graduated July 4, 1856 standing 1st in a class of 33. Also a Distinguished Graduate of University of Va. (attended 1856-57; and L'Ecole Imperiale des Ponte et Chaussees in Paris, France (1858-59). Careers: Cadet Acting Assistant Professor of Math at VMI 1855-56; Professor of Chemistry and Mineralogy at Louisiana State Seminary (Now La. State University). Military Record: Appointed Captain of Provisional Army of Va. and military secretary to then Maj. Gen. Robert E. Lee in May of 1861; elected Major of the 41st Va. Regiment July 6, 1861; not re-elected in May 1862; Volunteer Aide- De-Camp to then Brig. Gen. W. Mahone in spring of 1862; Appointed Major of Artillery May 21, 1863; At Drewry's Bluff during much of the War; Commanded artillery battalion on retreat from Petersburg; Mortally wounded in action and captured April 5, 1865 at Amelia Springs. Died- April 6, 1865 in U.S. Hospital at Amelia Court House. He was elected the Superintendent of La. State Seminary before they had been informed of his death. He was buried in Baltimore, Md.|
