Biography & Genealogy: | Edward Livingston Smith, Class of 1856: Genealogy: Born- June 16, 1835 in Deep Creek, Norfolk, Va. Father- Dr. Arthur Richardson Smith; Mother- Anna Maria Smith. Pat. Grandfather- Arthur Smith; Pat. Grandmother- Susan Richardson. Mat. Grandfather- Thomas Smith; Mat. Grandmother- Christiana Riddick. Never married. VMI Record: Entered VMI- July 22, 1852; Graduated July 4, 1856 standing 2nd in a class of 33. Careers: Taught at Lynchburg one year; tutor for Mr. Johnson Otey's children in Mississippi; clerk in Dr. Boykin's office in Gosport Navy Yard, 1859. (Dr. Boykin was a Naval Store Keeper). He had many health problems that caused him to resign his teaching and clerical positions. Died- Accidentally shot himself while duck hunting in a boat with his brother, H. L. Smith on Dec. 12, 1859. Died from the effects of his wound Dec. 22, 1859. |
