Entered VMI- Sept. 1, 1852; Graduated July 4, 1856 standing 15 in a class of 33 and with the rank of 1st Captain. Civil War Service- 2nd Lieut. in Lynchburg Volunteer Co.; Enlisted May 10, 1861 as Captain of what became Capt. J.J. Shoemaker's Co. of the Va. Horse Artillery (Also known as Lynchburg Beauregards; Capt. M.N. Moorman's Co.; and the Beauregard Rifles). Promoted to Major Feb. 27, 1864. Commanded artillery battalion for the rest of the War.
