|Biography & Genealogy:||James Preston Hammet, Class of 1853: Genealogy: Born- Sept. 26, 1832 in Christiansburg, Montgomery Co. Va. Father- Col. Edward Hammet; Mother- Clementine Venable Craig. Pat. Grandfather- Richard Hammet; Pat. Grandmother- Isabella Norwood. Mat. Grandfather- Captain James Craig; Mat. Grandmother- Anna Montgomery. Married- Katherine Markham Spiller in 1856. Children- One daughter, Kathleen Montgomery Hammet who married Judge George Edward Cassel of Radford, Va. They are buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Va. VMI Record: Entered VMI- July 24, 1850 as a 3rd Classman (Sophomore); Graduated July 4, 1853 standing 9th in a class of 25. Studied Medicine at the University of Virginia where he recived his M.D. in 1854. Obtained another degree in Medicine in Philadelphia. Military Record: Raised and became Captain of the New River Greys in May, 1861; his company became Co. K, 24th Va. Regt.; promoted to Major; resigned Sept. 6, 1861 for unknown reasons. Careers: Physician before and after the War. Became a Surgeon by 1864. in Aug. 1864 was a member of the Montgomery Co. Committee of Public Safety. Died- April 13, 1879.|
