Biography & Genealogy:David D. Price, Jr., VMI Commandant, 1895-1898. (bottom center in this photo of VMI Faculty, 1898). Born Wales; Appointed to United States Military Academy (West Point) from Iowa and graduated in 1877; commissioned 1st Lt. Artillery; assistant instructor at West Point (tactics), 1883-1887; subsequently stationed in California and south; VMI Commandant of Cadets, 1895-1898; during Spanish-American War was Major, 3rd Virginia Infantry, then chief mustering officer of Virginia; rejoined his regiment at Charleston, SC and from there went to Philippines (1903); retired 1906, Major; returned to active duty 1917-1919; retired 1919, Lt. Colonel; died, Rhode Island, August 25, 1941.

The database currently includes the names of all enrolled students (both graduates and non-graduates) from VMI's opening in 1839 through the World War II era. In addition, you will find biographical and genealogical information, including a summary of military service during the Civil War, for many individuals who attended in the 19th century. The database also includes some historical Faculty and Board of Visitors members, as well as U. S. Army students sent to VMI for training during World Wars I and II. The latter groups were not VMI cadets. For further information about an ancestor listed in the database, please contact the VMI Archives. We do not release information about living individuals.
