Grandmother- Mary Ogilvie. No information on Mat. Grandparents. Married- Harriet Curtis, daughter of Charles C. and Harriet T. Curtis of Glouchester Co. Va. Children- 1- Dr. John W. Cringan; 2- Hallie Cringan; 3- Mary Cringan. VMI Record: Entered VMI- July 1, 1850 as 3rd Classman (Sophomore); Graduated July 4, 1853 standing 16th in Class of 25. Careers: Clerk in a business house in New York from 1857 to 1861. Civil War Service: Commissioned July 17, 1861 as Captian and Asst. QuarterMaster of 1st Va. (Irish) Battalion. Transferred in May 1864 to 42nd Va. Battalion Cavalry which became 24th Va. Cav. Paroled at Appomattox. Post War Careers: Supt. of Laurel Industrial School for five years, Wholesale Grocer for 25 years. Died- Oct. 2, 1909.

The database currently includes the names of all enrolled students (both graduates and non-graduates) from VMI's opening in 1839 through the World War II era. In addition, you will find biographical and genealogical information, including a summary of military service during the Civil War, for many individuals who attended in the 19th century. The database also includes some historical Faculty and Board of Visitors members, as well as U. S. Army students sent to VMI for training during World Wars I and II.
