Biography & Genealogy:Colonel John W. Downer (VMI Class of 1902), served in the United States Army from 1901-1943 and was with the American Expeditionary Force (commanding 1st and later 2nd Battalions, 6th Field Artillery) in France during World War I. He was also a member of the U.S. Riding Team at the Seventh Olympic Games in 1920 and served as an American representative on the U.S. Olympic Committee. World War I Record: Lieutenant Colonel, Field Artillery, A.E.F. Severely wounded. Distinguished Service Cross, Croix de Guerre, Legion of Honour. With Army of Occupation as late as June, 1920, Commanding 2nd Battalion, 6th Field Artillery.
