Grandmother- (First name unknown) Cartwright. Married- Sybil A. Fletcher. No children. VMI Record: Entered VMI- Sept. 2, 1897; Graduated- June 26, 1901 standing 4th in a class of 35. His roommate while at VMI was George C. Marshall. Military Record: Colonel. 6th, 16th and 66th Infantry, 5th Division, American Expeditionary Forces. Awarded Distinguished Service Medal twice during World War I. Careers: Captain, Asst. Professor of Math and Tactics at VMI 1901-02; Asst. Professor of English, Engineering and Tactics, 1902.; on active duty in U.S. Army 1904-1942; Graduated from Army War College in 1931 and assigned to Fort Meade, Md.; served with War Department General Staff 1932- 1936; Commandant of the War College 1939-1940; assumed command of Eighth Division at Camp Jackson, SC 1940. Retired in 1942 due to ill health. Major General at time of retirement. Died- June 24, 1949 near Indian Head, Md.|
