|Biography & Genealogy:||Samuel Preston Gresham, Class of 1856: Born- Feb. 14, 1836 in Lancaster Co. Va. Father- Samuel Gresham; Mother- Sarah Goodrich Mitchell. Pat. Grandfather- John Gresham; Pat. Grandmother- Margaret Chowning. Mat. Grandfather- Richard Mitchell; Mat. Grandmother- [First name unknown] Gordon. Married- Mary Stuart Harvey, daughter of George Carmichael Harvey and Mary Susan Coxe. Children- 1- Ernest Willoughby Gresham, who married Nellie Chilton. 2- Genevieve Gresham White who married German White. 3- Lottie Vera Gresham (died at age four). 4- Mary Norma Gresham Micou Carney, who married Granville Micou, then Stephen Bud Carney, Jr.. 5- Musa Gresham Kellum who married Maury Kellum. 6- Samuel Preston Gresham who married Lillian Head. 7- Walter Preston Gresham who married Jennie Collins. 8- Harvey Stuart Gresham who married Emily Sneed. 9- Carroll Magruder Gresham who married Mary Selden Snead. 10- John Russell Gresham who married Lilly Brown. 11- Philip Mercer Gresham, who married Elizabeth Genevieve Pinkard. Entered VMI- Aug. 27, 1852; Dropped out July 9, 1853 (Defiecient in Math). Later attended Richmond College (now University of Richmond) and studied Law under his father. Civil War Service- Enlisted June 1, 1861 as Captain of Co. F. in 47th Va. Regt.; Wounded in the shoulder at Frayer's Farm and contracted Typhoid Fever while still recovering from shoulder wound. Returned to Regt. Sept. 1862 but was later dropped Feb. 25, 1863 for going AWOL. No more official war records after that although there was a Sam'l P. Gresham who enlisted at Camp Elzy as a Private in Co. C. of 24th Va. Cavalry, and this may have been Samuel Preston Gresham. Career- Lawyer, Superintendent of Schools in Lancaster Co. Va.; Clerk of County. Died- May 17, 1918.|
