Genealogy: Born July 24, 1834, near Covington, Alleghany Co., Virginia; Father- Samuel Carpenter of Alleghany Co., VA; Mother- Martha Allen Hannah of Botetourt Co., VA; Paternal grandparents- William Carpenter and Mary [Persinger?]; Maternal grandparents- Joseph Hannah and Harriet [last name unknown]. Marriage: Never married. VMI Record: His parents were living near Covington, Virginia at the time of his enrollment. He entered VMI on July 13, 1852 and graduated on July 4, 1856, standing 7th out of 33 graduates. Occupation/Career: Deputy Clerk of Court and manager of a cement works. Military Record (Civil War): Entered service on April 22, 1861 at Covington as 1st Lieut., Company A, 27th Virginia Infantry; elected Captain August 1861; in late 1861 the company was converted to Artillery (known as Alleghany Roughs, Alleghany Artillery, Carpenter's Battery); unit was part of the famed Stonewall Brigade; mortally wounded in action (head) at Cedar Mountain in August 1862 and died 5 or 11 February 1863.|
