Biography & Genealogy:Thomas Edmund Upshaw, Class of 1851: Born- June 16, 1828 in Caroline Co. Va. Father- Dr. James W. Upshaw; Mother- Maria Kidd. Pat. Grandfather- James Upshaw. No further information on grandparents. Guardian- B.F. Gresham (Upshaw's parents died when he was very young). Married- Mary Diana Webb, daughter of Richard D. Webb of Suffolk, Va. Children- 1- Mary Taylor Upshaw; 2- Julia Morton Upshaw; 3- Richard Webb Upshaw; 4- Thomas Edmund Upshaw; 5- Tudor Sprigg Upshaw. Entered VMI July 14, 1847; Graduated July 4, 1851 standing 21 in a class of 29. Civil War Service- Lt. Col. 13th Va. Cavalry; Wounded in Action June 21, 1863; Captured May 14, 1864 and held at Hilton Head, SC; Exchanged for a Union prisoner early Aug. 1864; Resigned from C.S.A Oct. 1, 1864 "doubting his ability to perform duty". Career- Civil Engineer. Died- Aug. 28, 1906 in St. Louis, MO.

The database currently includes the names of all enrolled students (both graduates and non-graduates) from VMI's opening in 1839 through the World War II era. In addition, you will find biographical and genealogical information, including a summary of military service during the Civil War, for many individuals who attended in the 19th century.
