|Biography & Genealogy:||James Giles, Class of 1851. Genealogy: Born- June 02, 1831, in Danville, Va. Father- Joseph Giles; Mother- Mary Lyons. Grandparents: unknown. 1st marriage- Mary Weems Riddick; 1st child- Annie Giles; 2nd- Harriet Giles. 2nd marriage- Harriet Riddick. Military Record: Civil War, Col., 29th VA Infantry. Careers: Civil engineer, teacher and surveyor in NC and GA prewar, and in MS, NM, Dallas and Austin postwar. Died- March 7th, 1887, in Hall County, Texas. Buried: Oakwood Cemetery, Austin. Grave location: Section 1 (which is the SW/4 of the cemetery), Lot 578, in a large curbed plot adjacent to the rear fence and a short distance east of the very tall conspicuous red granite obelisk of A.J. Peeler and across the road from Book #1's John B. Jones. The Giles plot can be easily identified by the red granite W.W. Woods monument that is the only marker in it.|
