VMI Record: Entered VMI- Dec. 30, 1850; Graduated July 4, 1854 standing 9 in a class of 14 with rank of First Captain. Civil War Service- Commissioned Captain of Artillery in NC early in 1861; Assigned to Ft. Macon, NC.; Appointed Major of 6th North Carolina Infantry Regiment May 20, 1861; Promoted to Lt. Col. July 11, 1861; Wounded in action at the First Battle of Manassas; Detached to command post of Fredericksburg, Va. and in March 1862 the 5th Ala. Battalion; Elected Col. of 22nd NC March 13, 1862; Wounded in action May 31, 1862 at Seven Pines and captured there; Held at Ft. Delaware, DE; Exchanged Aug. 5, 1862; Defeated for re-election while imprisoned; Appointed Lt. Col. Oct. 7, 1862 and assigned to command artillery battalion in Richmond, Va. defense force.
