Biography & Genealogy: | Genealogy: Born Flint Hill, Rappahannock Co., VA on Feb. 17, 1870. Father- George W. Dearing. Mother- (Patsy) Martha Elizabeth Moore. VMI Record: Matriculated July 16, 1887 from Flint Hill; graduated June 25, 1891, standing 17th in a class of 33. Later Life: Studied literature and logic at the University of Virginia, 1891-1892; taught at Marion (Alabama) Military Institute, 1892-1893; suffered from chronic lung problems and moved to New Mexico to improve his health; in NM taught and also wrote articles for newspapers and magazines; subsequently went to Samoa, but became ill and started home, dying enroute in Honolulu on May 16, 1896. Unmarried, no issue. Dearing Medal: Established October 1916 from a bequest in the will of Dearing's mother; is awarded annually to a member of the graduating class who has demonstrated the highest proficiency in the study of English and English literature. |
