|Biography & Genealogy:||Walter Browne Botts, Class of 1854. Genealogy: Born September 7, 1835, Fredericksburg, VA. Father- Thomas H. Botts (b. 1800 d. 1854); Mother- Mary S. Stone (b. 1804, m. 1828, d. 1857; Thomas's second wife); paternal grandfather- Benjamin Alexander Botts; maternal grandparents- William S. Stone (d. 1827) and Millie Richards (d. 1830). VMI Record: Entered VMI on August 27, 1851 and grdauted in July 1854, standing 6th out of 14 graduates. Marriage: Martha Elizabeth McIlhenny, on September 4, 1860. Children- 11; 7 living in 1909, including 1. Mattie (m. David Rice, Houston, TX) 2. Mec 3. Hester (m. Thomas Arthur Cargill, Houston, TX) 4. Walter 5. Eva (m. J. M. Henderson, Dallas TX), 6. Thomas 7. Anna Waldo (m. C. P. Reid, New York City). Career: Lawyer. He came to Houston, Texas in 1858 and formed a partnership with Judge Peter Gray. Military Record, Civil War: Lt. Col., 5th Texas Infantry Regiment; wounded in action at Seven Pines; resigned 13 July 1862 (effects of wound and pneumonia). Death: March 7, 1894, Houston, Texas. Buried: Glenwood Cemetery, Houston. Grave location: Section E. Lot 14, near the middle of West Ave. Other information: His half-brother, Lawson Botts, was a member of the Class of 1844; his father, Thomas H. Botts, served on the VMI Board of Visitors from 1839-1845.|
