Grandfather- Judge Paul Carrington; Pat. Grandmother- unknown. Mat. Grandfather- Gen. Francis Preston; Mat. Grandmother- Sarah (Sallie) Buchanan Campbell, daughter of Gen. William Campbell and Elizabeth Henry, who was the sister of Patrick Henry, the famous orator. Married- Maria Anthony Swope. Children- 1- Edward C. Carrington; 2- William Campbell Carrington. VMI Record: Entered VMI- July 1, 1841; Resigned July 4, 1843. Military Service: Mexican War- Capt. of Co. A 1st Va. Infantry. Civil War- Appointed Capt. of Co. A, DC Militia on April 10, 1861 (later this became Co. A, 2nd Battalion, DC Militia; Promoted to Brig. Gen. of DC Militia- highest ranking VMI Alumnus in US Service during the Civil War. Careers: Lawyer; editor; public official; Representative for Botetourt Co in Va. House of Delegates 1850-51; Editor of Fincastle Valley Whig publication; Appointed US District Attorney for DC April 17, 1861- held position for nearly ten years serving under Lincoln, Johnson and Grant; later moved to Prince George Co. Va. and became the Attorney for that town. Died- June 3, 1891. |
